Just got back from my first relay for life. Although the bme grad student team was small and the weather was less than ideal, what an amazingly positive and rewarding experience! :)
walked 11.5 hours (7.5 last night, 4 this morning) at an avg of 3 miles per hour. I had no idea I could do that (especially since I had a POTS flareup a few weeks ago) so that was pretty cool. The event was fun despite the cold but now I am ready to crash and hoping to not walk for awhile haha
if you have never relayed before, I highly recommend it!!!
Hope you are well! Life updates please!! |

Hi all! I hope you all are well, and once I am no longer buried under helping my advisor with a lab grant, I hope to get a chance to catch up with you guys because I miss you tons!!!
So I'm going to be walking in Relay for Life this year at Case, along with the BME grad student team, to help raise money for cancer research. This cause is important to me for 2 reasons: As a grad student in biomedical imaging, a lot of my research involves cancer. More importantly, I'm walking in memory of my grandfather who passed away when I was in 4th grade, as well as in support of several friends who struggled with cancer when we were growing up.
I know we're all poor to varying degrees due to student loans, jobs not paying great, etc, but I'd really appreciate it if you could spare a few dollars for this wonderful cause.

Thanks! :) |

you know, hugh jackman is actually a pretty good host, i'm surprised! i'm more entertained by the oscars than i have been the past few years (Which is bad because i have work i should be doing) :P
i <3 the fact that tim gunn did red carpet reporting! :) i've needed my fix since project runway is all tied up in legal woes.
speaking of movies, if you haven't seen coraline, go do so! it's probably too late to see it in 3d now (i think that ends this weekend) but it's an excellent movie :) |

last night i was all upset because i still hadn't heard shit from grad schools and i was in the middle of working on a stubborn hw set and i just needed a (short) good cry. the waiting is very stressful, especially thanks to penn's "if you haven't heard by mid february we can't be encouraging" sort of statement (which made me feel the same is true for all of my other schools... thus, as we inch closer to february, i get more nervous)
i log into my email and as i'm looking up my penn user ID to check my app status i get a new email and right in the subject line "UVA - interview invitation UVA BME"
!!!!
so, if i got an invite at one school maybe i'll get an invite at some others too? UVA is a freakin' competitive BME program...
yay i'm so happy i at least got one invite! it'll cushion the blow of any rejections lol (and the waiting for schools like yale and cornell that don't do interviews and i won't hear from til march). the only bummer is uva would mean a lot of travel to see jacob...
anyway, it's in my top 5 on my list and we'll see what i think of it after i've visited.
the interview weekend i'm choosing is at the end of spring break (3/13 and 3/14) this way it kinda cuts down on the traveling mess.

since it's '09 and therefore our year! (and because i've been working on summer internship/job apps today), i'm curious:
what are you looking to do after you graduate college in may? discuss! inform! :P
brought to you by a sick day, and an attempt to be further caught up in people's lives :) |

several weeks back, i came across something online about how ben folds was having a contest for college a cappella groups, where they could record themselves performing covers of his songs and he'd pick his favorites to record an album of covers WITH him. one of my former freshies from my d'lioning days is in our premiere a capella group on campus (the midnight ramblers -> the ones who came to Eustace during senior year) and so i told him about the contest and said "you know, you guys should enter"
... ... ... apparently they were one of the chosen groups! :) |

mood: busy

my to-do list for thanksgiving break: 1) biophysics presentation about the physics of theraputic ultrasound techniques, due 12/4 (but possibly 12/9 if Gao does indeed extend project presentations into reading period...)
2) the building-a-low-field-MRI-machine-from-scratch project is hanging over our heads, with a deadline of 12/9 to have everything assembled and working properly. the man who runs the machine shop was supposed to have the tube for our heating system machined out by "early this week"...but he wasn't in today, so we can't build our heating system til after break. oops.
3) my last graduate app (UC Berkeley) which, for some bizarre reason, requires 3 essays. because clearly a personal statement isn't enough.
4) working on my much-neglected independent study in C13 NMR spectroscopy. thankfully i finally have data, and i've already done a lot of the data analysis for it... but figuring out what to write about when the assignment guidelines haven't been given to me = a bit of a challenge. i've got every book about C13 NMR spectroscopy in Carlson library on hold...
there's really not much i can do about #2 over break. #1 and #3 are the most crucial, and i'll work on #4 if time...
+ thanksgiving dinner w/ the fam and jacob, some much desired shopping (yay sales + 30% off rewards for AE!), taking a break on friday to go to the George Eastman house to see the annual gingerbread house competition, trying to figure out hanukkah presents for jacob, etc.
oy. thanksgiving break seems to be less of a break each year!!
anyways, i miss you all dearly and i can't wait to see you over winter break! |

Dear Livejournal, I see enough commercials from Randy Kuhl's campaign up here in Rochester. Pretty much every time I turn on the tv, in fact.
Please don't show them in auto-play format when I log into livejournal.
I know I've neglected you of late, but seriously? You won't win me back with that.
Thanks muchly :) ~me |

so I FINALLY finished a non-school book today for the first time in a little under a year. DEPRESSING! it was "Making Money" by Terry Pratchett, which I received in the mail shortly after the school year started, on the day that it came out. I had time to read about 20 pages before getting so inundated with work that I forgot about it. anyway I've spent my "on campus before I go into work since I get here ridiculously early!"-time and my lunch hour reading to kinda give my brain a rest from nothing but MRI. After finishing the book today, I felt such a sense of accomplishment because I finally made time for something I want to read just for the heck of it!
And thus begins my lofty literary goal: ( I've got til August 29th before I leave for Rochester...can I do it? )
i'll update this every few weeks (if i remember to) to track progress haha.
anybody have any recommendations for others to add to this list?? leave 'em here! (especially you, Liz :P) |

anyone up for something next weekend??
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MEG! :) celebrating your 21st w/ a tornado watch, exciting :P |

When is everyone's spring break? I'm home 3/9-3/14. I should be free most days, 'cept the 12th when I go into Philly to discuss what project I'll be working on this summer w/ UPenn MRI physics. |
